"The Game of Life" by Jan Girod-Change

Change, a word with many layers….life changes occur whether we “want” them to or not, some good, some bad. So as I pondered the meaning of this word I was a bit overwhelmed by the ideas of how I "could" proceed. Then lightening struck…..simplify! Take the medium we all love to work with, fabric, alter it through surface design or simply cut and paste, so to speak. A couple of the commercial fabrics were used as is; on others the following techniques were used by me or friends to “change” the cloth: hand-dyeing, shibori, and discharge. I then tore, cut, fused or stitched the fabrics together into a random composition that I found pleasing…simple as that.

  1. A Very Cool Piece. Lots for the eye to look at, whirls to move the eye around, symmetry and asymmetry, interesting things to notice. I really like it.

  3. So often the best answer.....the simple one. It worked very well for you and you did create movement throughout the work. Good Job. Helen

  4. I love, love, love your piece. Everyone's piece is great, but this one is the most like me! Expecially with the spirals as that is a theme in many of my quilts! The layout, the colors, it is all me!

  6. I am very pleased with how it turned out....better than I thought it would mid-way through. For me doing abstract vs representional work has always come with a lot of agony, does this look right, design wise is it up to snuff, that type of thing. This is my baggage from childhood, as my mother is an artist, who constantly battled with the abstract genre. I remember she took a painting class where the emphasis was on abstract just to stretch herself and all we heard was negative comments. To this day she doesn't care for the genre. Over the last couple of years I have worked hard to create such pieces, but remain more comfortable and confident in representational work. Thank you all for your positive reinforcement.
